whether 和 if 可以都是表示[是否]，在回答yes或是no的問句時，可以互換使用。

Example: Has the train arrived? (原問句>>需回答yes或no的問題)

I am not sure whether/ if the train has already arrived.

She called the restaurant to see whether / if  it was open.

在正式書寫中 (formal writing) 用到上述用法時，會用whether喔！

whether 和 if 不可交換使用 / 差異

1.當 if 後面接的是條件句時(意思為[如果]，當然不能互換喔)

If you don’t book now, you won’t get good tickets.
Please contact us if you have further questions.

2. 用 whether 表示有兩個不同選項或可能性

It is unsure whether she will be interested in getting the job.
(她可能會對這份工作感興趣，但也有可能對這份工作不感興趣)

下面句子雖然whether 或是 if 都可以用，但是意思上並不完全相同。

Inform the student adviser whether you need help. 
(不管你需不需要幫忙，都請告知對方)👈兩個方案：可能需要、可能不需要
Inform the student adviser if you need help. 
(如果你需要幫忙的話，再告知即可)👈一個方案：需要幫忙的時候

當有其他選擇方案時，我們傾向會在後方加上 or
Do you know whether (or not) the train will arrive soon? 
I asked him whether he wanted to stay in a hotel or a B&B. 
I’m coming with you to the hospital, whether you want me to or not.

3. 後面接續的是不定詞(to verb)：只能用 whether 

I am unsure whether to accept a ride from that gentleman. 
Have you decided whether to go to college?
He does not know whether to go to movie or not.

4. 在介系詞後面：用 whether 

I would talk about whether you are going to USA.
It depends on whether I get home early or not. 
We need to talk about whether to move house.

5. whether後面接續的句子當主詞時

Whether you like jazz will influence your opinion of this new club.  
Whether you sink or swim is not my concern
